The Rewritten Rings Storyline

What if the NBA we know never happened?

Rewritten Rings is a journey through an alternate NBA history that begins in 1983–84, one year before one of the biggest changes in the entire project: Michael Jordan is removed from the 1984 NBA Draft.

But this isn't simply a story about taking Jordan out of the draft and seeing where he eventually ends up. The story begins a year earlier because everything matters.

By starting the simulation in 1983–84, even the standings and team placements are different by the time the 1984 Draft arrives. That changes which teams are in position to select players, which players go where, and ultimately how those franchises develop.

From there, the changes continue to build. One different draft pick can change a franchise. That can change a trade several years later. A different trade can alter a playoff series, which can change a championship, which can influence another draft, and the cycle continues.

It's a domino effect that stretches across the entire league. Players who were stars in real life may find themselves on completely different teams, while franchises that struggled in reality can develop into contenders.

Dynasties can rise where they never existed, championships can go to different cities, and careers that followed a familiar path in the real NBA can take completely unexpected turns.

That's what makes Rewritten Rings more than a simple alternate history. The goal isn't to change one event and then fill in the blanks with what we already know.

The simulation creates its own history, season by season. Every draft, trade, free-agent signing, injury, playoff series, award and championship becomes part of a new timeline. By the time the story reaches the players we know best, the NBA will already be a very different place.

If the first major change is to remove Michael Jordan from the 1984 Draft. Than the second major turning point comes in 1996, when Kobe Bryant is also removed from the draft.

In the real NBA, Bryant entered the league as a high school prospect and became one of the defining players of his generation. In this universe, however, his story is pushed into the future.

That means another generation of players, teams and franchises develop without Kobe, creating yet another ripple through an already very different NBA.

By the time the timeline reaches the early 2000s, the league will have spent nearly two decades developing without either Jordan or Kobe ever stepping onto an NBA court.

Eventually, that brings us to another major turning point. LeBron James will still enter the NBA in 2003, Kobe Bryant will arrive in 2004, and Michael Jordan will finally enter the league in 2005.

In real NBA history, these three players belonged to different generations. Here, they will all play in the same era. But they won't be entering the NBA we remember. They'll be entering a league that has already been shaped by more than two decades of alternate history.

And that's where the biggest question of the entire project begins. What happens when Jordan, Kobe and LeBron all play in the same NBA universe?

Which teams will they play for? Who will they compete against? Which players will become their biggest rivals? How many championships will they win? Will one of them dominate the era, or will their careers become defined by the competition between them? We don't know the answers yet, and that's intentional.

The journey began in 1983–84, more than 20 years before Jordan, Kobe and LeBron ever share the same NBA era. It will continue through their arrivals, their careers, their rivalries and eventually their retirements.

The goal is to follow this universe for more than 40 seasons, documenting the champions, MVPs, stars, dynasties, heartbreaks and unexpected moments that make this NBA unlike the one we know.

This is not a prediction of what the NBA could have been. It is the history of what the NBA became in a different universe.

One season at a time, the story continues.
